This woodblock print is part of the series Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the early 1830s. The series demonstrates the artist's interest in the formal qualities of water, moving beyond simple topographical representation to explore the physical power and rhythmic patterns of cascades.

The composition centres on the Yoshitsune Falls in Yamato Province. Hokusai employs a distinct graphic language to render the water, using bold, sweeping lines to suggest the force of the current as it descends over the rocks. The water is depicted with a stylised, almost sculptural quality, contrasting with the more textured, rounded forms of the surrounding terrain. Two figures are shown in the foreground, tending to a horse within the stream. Their presence provides a sense of scale, grounding the dramatic natural elements in a human narrative.

Technically, the print relies on the precise application of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available to Japanese printmakers. Hokusai uses this colour to create depth and movement, allowing the white of the paper to represent the spray and foam of the falls. The palette is balanced, with the cool tones of the water set against the warm, earthy hues of the rock formations and the horse.
