A woodblock print by Gochōtei Sadahiro depicting a courtesan dressed as a traditional shirabyōshi dancer, showcasing the refined aesthetic of the Kamigata-e style.
This woodblock print by Gochōtei Sadahiro depicts Yotsu, a woman from the Matsukiyo brothel, dressed in the traditional attire of a shirabyōshi. Shirabyōshi were female dancers who performed in the imperial court during the Heian and Kamakura periods, typically wearing male-style court clothing including the suikan jacket and the tall eboshi hat. Sadahiro captures the performer in a moment of movement, her posture suggesting the rhythmic nature of the sacred dance.
The composition is characteristic of the Kamigata-e style, which originated in the Osaka and Kyoto regions. Unlike the more common Edo-style prints, these works often focused on the theatricality of the kabuki stage and the lives of courtesans within the pleasure districts. The figure is rendered with clean, precise lines, allowing the pattern of the kimono to take visual precedence. The textile design features a repeating circular motif, which contrasts with the fluid, wave-like lines of the outer garment. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, muted creams, and subtle red accents to define the form without overwhelming the viewer.
To the left, a cartouche contains the title of the series, Sacred Dances in Shinmachi, written in elegant calligraphy. The artist's signature and seal are positioned to the right, providing authentication of the work. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the Shinmachi district, where the boundaries between professional performance and the social life of the pleasure quarters were often blurred. The print remains a record of the aesthetic preferences of the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrating the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Sadahiro to produce these images for a discerning urban audience.
