A precise, stylised depiction of the Iowa countryside by American Regionalist painter Grant Wood, featuring rolling hills and rhythmic, rounded trees.
Young Corn, painted in 1931, is a characteristic example of Grant Wood's mature style. It depicts the rolling hills of Iowa, rendered with a deliberate, almost sculptural precision. The composition is structured around the rhythmic, repetitive forms of the trees and the undulating contours of the earth. Wood employs a smooth application of paint, which minimises visible brushwork and contributes to the clean, polished appearance of the scene.
The work captures a quiet moment in agricultural life. Small figures are visible in the lower left, tending to the young crops, yet they remain secondary to the overwhelming presence of the environment. The trees are depicted as dense, rounded masses, creating a sense of order and stability. This stylisation reflects Wood's interest in the decorative potential of the American Midwest, moving away from the gritty realism often associated with the era.
Wood's approach to light and shadow is calculated. The sun casts long, sharp shadows across the fields, which helps to define the topography and adds a sense of depth to the composition. The colour palette is dominated by various shades of green, ranging from pale, sun-drenched grass to the darker, cooler tones of the foliage. This work is held in the collection of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, where it remains a representative piece of the artist's focus on the rural identity of his home state.
