A refined woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, featuring a court lady in a patterned kimono, characteristic of the Edo period surimono tradition.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman depicts a court lady in a moment of quiet reflection. Shunman, a polymath of the Edo period, was known for his work in the surimono genre: private, commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists. The composition focuses on the figure, whose posture suggests a gentle inclination. Her attire, a layered kimono featuring a repeating floral motif, occupies much of the visual space. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on muted tones of red, teal, and soft ochre to define the garments.
The print incorporates calligraphic text, a common feature in surimono, which integrates the visual image with literary content. The lines are fine and controlled, characteristic of the refined aesthetic favoured by the literati circles of the time. The figure is rendered with a sense of grace, her long, dark hair flowing across the fabric of her robes. The background remains largely empty, which directs the viewer to the details of the clothing and the posture of the subject.
Shunman was a student of Kitao Shigemasa and developed a distinct style that often moved away from the more dramatic portrayals found in contemporary commercial prints. His work is noted for its technical precision and the subtle application of colour. This piece reflects the cultural interests of the period, where poetry and visual art were closely linked. The print is an example of the sophisticated output produced for a knowledgeable audience, prioritising balance and technical skill over bold, high-contrast imagery. It remains a representative example of the surimono tradition, where the interplay between text and image creates a unified aesthetic experience.
