A detailed sixteenth-century woodcut by Nicolò Boldrini, depicting a young rider returning from a hunt.
This woodcut by the Venetian printmaker Nicolò Boldrini depicts a young man mounted on a horse, travelling through a rural setting. The rider carries a small animal, likely game, slung over his shoulder, suggesting a return from a hunt. Boldrini, active in the mid-sixteenth century, is known for his technical skill in translating the fluid, painterly qualities of Venetian art into the medium of the woodblock.
The composition employs a clear division between the foreground figure and the background scenery. The horse and rider occupy the left and centre, rendered with dense, parallel hatching to define the musculature of the animal and the folds of the rider's clothing. The background features a simplified view of trees and a distant structure, providing a sense of space without distracting from the primary subject. The lines are precise, demonstrating the control required to carve such detail into the wood block.
Boldrini often collaborated with Titian, and his work reflects the stylistic conventions of the Venetian school. The print captures a quiet, observational moment of daily life. The figure is presented in profile, a common convention for such genre scenes of the period. The texture of the horse's mane and the foliage is achieved through varied line weights, showing the artist's ability to create depth and form through monochromatic means. This print offers a view into the graphic traditions of the Italian Renaissance, where the woodcut served as a primary method for the dissemination of imagery beyond the elite circles of painting and sculpture. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards maintained by Venetian print workshops during this era.
