A portrait of a young woman in a straw hat, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, featuring his signature thick brushwork and bold colour palette.
Painted during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, this portrait captures a local woman set against a dense, vertical field of wheat. Vincent van Gogh utilised a palette dominated by high-chroma yellows and blues, a characteristic choice during this period of his career. The subject wears a straw hat adorned with a blue ribbon, her expression neutral and direct. The background consists of rhythmic, vertical brushstrokes that suggest the texture of the grain, creating a sense of enclosure around the figure.
Van Gogh often turned to the rural population of Auvers for his subjects, seeking to document the lives of those working the land. The composition is structured with the figure occupying the centre, her blue bodice patterned with small, rhythmic marks that echo the movement in the wheat behind her. The white apron provides a visual break, drawing the eye to the seated posture of the woman. The application of paint is thick and deliberate, with visible impasto that gives the surface a tactile quality. This work reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the human figure and the natural environment, using colour to establish mood rather than strict realism. The contrast between the warm yellow of the hat and the cool blue of the clothing creates a balanced visual tension, typical of his late style. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to transform a simple rural scene into a study of form and colour.
