This Persian miniature, dating to the mid-seventeenth century, depicts a quiet pedagogical moment between an elder mentor and a young prince. The figures sit upon a grassy knoll, surrounded by a stylised natural environment that includes a blossoming tree, rocky outcrops, and a distant horizon. The mentor gestures towards a small circular object, perhaps an astrolabe or a symbolic tool of wisdom, while an open manuscript rests between them on the ground. The composition follows the conventions of the Safavid period, where the focus remains on the interaction of the figures within a carefully balanced, two-dimensional space.
The work is framed by an elaborate border featuring gold-leaf floral motifs against a pale blue background. This decorative margin is characteristic of the high-quality manuscript production of the era, where the illumination of the page was as significant as the central scene itself. The colour palette relies on soft earth tones for the ground and rocks, contrasted by the muted blue and pink garments worn by the subjects.
