A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting a samurai on horseback passing women at a window.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai captures a moment of urban observation in Edo-period Japan. The composition features a young samurai mounted on a dappled horse, passing by a structure where two women watch from behind a latticed window. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to professional printmaking, often focused on the daily lives of the urban population, moving away from the theatrical subjects common to his contemporaries.
The print employs the characteristic flat perspective of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The architectural elements, such as the diamond-patterned wall and the wooden lattice, provide a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the horse and the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greens, and subtle reds, which is typical of the mid-period prints produced by the artist. The horse is rendered with a decorative quality, its coat markings echoing the patterns found in the surrounding architecture.
Koryūsai was prolific during the 1770s and 1780s, and his work frequently explored the social dynamics between different classes within the city. Here, the interaction is implied rather than explicit, as the samurai gazes forward while the women observe from their sheltered position. The inclusion of the pine branch in the upper left corner adds a traditional element to the scene, grounding the urban encounter in a familiar visual language. This print offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the balance between human figures and their environment was carefully managed through line and colour block application. The print is a fine example of the artist's ability to combine narrative suggestion with a disciplined approach to composition and form.
