A refined study of a woman in profile, executed in pastel and gouache on paper by Edgar Degas, capturing the fashion and posture of late 19th-century Paris.
This work by Edgar Degas captures a figure in profile, rendered with the economy of line and sensitivity to light that defined his later career. The subject, depicted in a contemporary street costume, is positioned against a neutral, unworked paper background. Degas uses the mid-tone of the paper to act as a bridge between the dark charcoal shadows and the lighter applications of gouache.
His approach to the figure is observational. He focuses on the silhouette and the fall of fabric, particularly the draping of the skirt, which suggests movement and volume without unnecessary detail. The application of medium is selective: the face is defined by subtle shading, while the clothing is built up through broader, more gestural strokes. This technique allows the viewer to perceive the weight and texture of the garment through minimal means.
Degas often turned his attention to the inhabitants of Paris, observing them in moments of transition or quietude. This study reflects his interest in the fashion of the period, specifically the structured silhouettes popular in the late 1870s. By isolating the figure from any specific setting, he directs the focus entirely onto the posture and the character of the individual. The work demonstrates his mastery of pastel, a medium he favoured for its ability to combine the immediacy of drawing with the tonal range of painting. It remains a clear example of his ability to elevate a simple study into a compelling characterisation of a contemporary woman.
