Yui: The Yui River - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Yui station, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. It belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, a variation of his famous travel prints that incorporates kyoka, or humorous thirty-one-syllable poems, into the composition. The print shows travellers crossing the shallow Yui River on simple wooden planks, a common sight for those navigating the coastal route.

Hiroshige uses a clear, graphic approach to represent the geography of the region. A large, rounded hill dominates the background, dotted with pine trees that provide a rhythmic quality to the scene. The foreground is defined by the river, rendered in distinct bands of blue, and the sandy banks where figures move with purpose. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens for the hills, earthy tones for the ground, and a subtle pink gradient at the top of the sky, which suggests the transition of light at dawn or dusk.

The inclusion of calligraphy adds a vertical element to the composition, balancing the horizontal flow of the river and the road. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the atmosphere of a specific location while maintaining the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
