A striking screenprint by Terry Frost, featuring a rhythmic stack of curved, colourful forms against a bright yellow ground.
Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School, produced work defined by his response to light, movement, and the Cornish coast. Zebra is a screenprint that demonstrates his interest in rhythmic form and colour interaction. The composition consists of a vertical stack of horizontal, curved shapes, which are arranged against a bright yellow ground. These forms, reminiscent of stacked vessels or organic segments, are framed by two vertical, textured grey bands that provide a sense of structure to the otherwise fluid arrangement.
Frost often utilised simple geometric shapes to explore the relationship between positive and negative space. In this print, the repetition of the curved forms creates a sense of oscillation, drawing the eye up and down the vertical axis. The palette is composed of saturated primary and secondary colours, including red, blue, green, and orange. These hues are applied with a flat, graphic quality that is characteristic of his later printmaking practice. The texture within the grey side panels adds a subtle contrast to the smooth, solid colour fields of the central stack.
Throughout his career, Frost moved away from direct representation, preferring to distill his observations of the world into essential shapes. His work is not concerned with narrative, but rather with the physical sensation of colour and the balance of form. This print captures his ability to create visual energy through minimal means. The arrangement of the shapes suggests a playful, almost musical quality, reflecting his long-standing interest in the interplay between rhythm and visual art. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Frost allows the viewer to focus on the pure interaction of the shapes and the brightness of the yellow background. This piece is a clear example of his mature style, where clarity of form and the emotive power of colour take precedence over traditional subject matter.
