Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878) was a French painter associated with the Barbizon School, a group of artists who advocated painting directly from nature. Daubigny's work is characterised by its atmospheric effects and his focus on capturing the transient qualities of light and weather. He is considered an important precursor to Impressionism, influencing artists such as Claude Monet. 'Zeegezicht', painted in 1874, presents a tranquil seascape under a cloudy sky. The composition is divided horizontally, with the sky occupying the upper portion of the canvas and the sea below. The colour palette is muted, dominated by greys, blues, and greens, creating a sense of calm. Small boats are visible on the horizon, adding a sense of scale to the vastness of the sea. In the foreground, waves gently roll towards the shore, their crests touched with white foam. A flock of seagulls flies above the water, adding a sense of movement to the scene.
