A graphite study of traditional Dutch fishing boats by Hague School artist Willem Bastiaan Tholen, capturing the calm atmosphere of the Zuiderzee.
Willem Bastiaan Tholen, a member of the second generation of the Hague School, produced this graphite study of botters, the traditional flat-bottomed fishing vessels of the Zuiderzee. His work frequently documented the maritime life of the Netherlands, capturing the atmospheric conditions of the Dutch coast with a focus on light and movement.
In this drawing, Tholen employs a light, rhythmic touch to define the silhouettes of the boats against the water. The composition is open, allowing the expansive sky and the calm surface of the sea to occupy the majority of the frame. The graphite marks are applied with varying pressure, creating a sense of depth through the subtle shading of the sails and the reflections on the water. A small rowing boat in the foreground provides a sense of scale, drawing the viewer into the scene.
Tholen was known for his ability to observe the nuances of weather and water. His sketches often served as preparatory work for his oil paintings, yet they possess a complete quality as independent studies. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the essence of the vessels and the quiet activity of the harbour. The work reflects the broader interest of the Hague School painters in the daily lives of fishermen and the changing moods of the Dutch environment. This print captures the original texture of the graphite on paper, preserving the delicate lines and the soft, tonal transitions that define Tholen's approach to drawing. It is a quiet, observational piece that documents a specific maritime tradition before the enclosure of the Zuiderzee altered the region forever.
