A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Salomon Savery depicting a two-masted 'Speel Jacht' under sail.
This etching by Salomon Savery depicts a two-masted vessel, identified in the lower margin as a 'Speel Jacht'. The work captures the technical precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch maritime art. Savery, a member of a prominent family of artists, utilised the etching medium to define the structural elements of the ship, from the rigging and sails to the hull construction. The vessel is shown in profile, moving across the water with a sense of buoyancy. A Dutch flag is visible at the stern, while smaller pennants flutter from the masts, suggesting a light breeze.
The composition is balanced, with the primary subject occupying the centre of the frame. In the background, smaller craft and a distant shoreline provide context, grounding the vessel in a recognisable maritime environment. The artist employed varied line weights to differentiate between the solid form of the ship and the atmospheric quality of the sky and water. The clouds are rendered with delicate, parallel strokes, creating a sense of depth without overwhelming the primary subject.
Savery's work reflects the broader interest in naval architecture and maritime trade that defined the Dutch Golden Age. Such prints were often produced as part of larger series documenting various types of watercraft, serving both as artistic studies and as records of contemporary ship design. The inclusion of the inscription 'S. Savery Ex.' indicates his role as the publisher of the print, a common practice for artists of the period who managed the distribution of their own graphic work. This piece offers a clear view of the aesthetic and technical priorities of the era, focusing on the functional beauty of the vessel rather than dramatic narrative.
