A nineteenth-century lithographic study of the human ear, designed as a pedagogical tool for art students to master anatomical form and shading.
This lithographic plate, produced by the Parisian firm Aubert & Cie., represents a classic example of nineteenth-century academic drawing instruction. The print features six distinct studies of the human ear, captured from various angles and levels of completion. Such sheets were common in the mid-nineteenth century, serving as pedagogical tools for students learning to master the complexities of human anatomy through repetitive practice.
The composition is organised with clarity, presenting the ear in both isolated form and partially integrated with hair, allowing the student to observe how light and shadow define the cartilage and folds. The draughtsmanship relies on precise, controlled lines and subtle tonal shading to convey the three-dimensional volume of the subject. By isolating specific features, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the structural nuances of the ear, which is often considered one of the most difficult parts of the human head to render accurately.
Aubert & Cie. were well-known for their contributions to the dissemination of artistic knowledge through print media. This specific plate, marked as 'Pl. 4', likely belonged to a larger drawing manual or a series of instructional lithographs intended for use in art academies or private studios. The work reflects the rigorous standards of the period, where the ability to draw from memory and understand anatomical form was a prerequisite for any aspiring artist. The paper retains the characteristic texture of mid-century lithographic printing, with the monochromatic palette focusing entirely on the interplay of form and shadow. This print offers a glimpse into the methodical approach of historical art education, where the mastery of individual features preceded the composition of full portraits.
