This etching, titled Zevende gezicht op het Colosseum te Rome, is part of a series documenting the ruins of ancient Rome. Hieronymus Cock, a Flemish publisher and printmaker, played a significant role in disseminating classical imagery to Northern Europe during the sixteenth century. His work captures the physical decay of the Colosseum, focusing on the structural remnants of the arches and the encroaching vegetation that had taken hold of the masonry by the mid-sixteenth century.

The composition employs a low vantage point, which emphasises the scale of the remaining stone structures. Cock uses precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of weathered stone, crumbling brickwork, and wild foliage. Small figures are included in the foreground, providing a sense of scale and human interaction with the site. These figures, often depicted as travellers or scholars, reflect the contemporary interest in humanism and the study of antiquity.

Cock operated the 'Aux Quatre Vents' publishing house in Antwerp, which became a centre for the production of prints after classical models. By circulating these images, he allowed artists and architects in the North to study Roman architecture without travelling to Italy. The print demonstrates a balance between technical accuracy and the romanticised aesthetic of the ruin, a theme that occupied many artists of the period.
