A detailed 18th-century illustration by Abraham Delfos depicting a ceremonial sleigh procession for a Dutch academic event.
This work by Abraham Delfos depicts the seventh sleigh in a ceremonial procession, a common feature of 18th-century Dutch academic festivities. Delfos, a Dutch engraver and draughtsman, captures the precise details of the period costume and the elaborate ornamentation of the transport. The scene shows a horse-drawn sleigh, decorated with gold trim and painted panels, carrying figures in formal attire. To the right, two attendants carry a banner inscribed with the Latin phrase 'Salus Academiae', indicating the academic context of the event.
The composition is balanced and linear, typical of the period's interest in documenting public spectacles and pageantry. The figures are rendered with clear outlines, and the application of watercolour provides a soft, controlled palette that defines the textures of the velvet garments and the gilded sleigh. The horse is shown in a controlled gait, adorned with a decorative harness that matches the aesthetic of the sleigh itself. The background remains plain, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the procession participants and their equipment.
Abraham Delfos was active in Leiden, where he produced numerous prints documenting the city's history and social life. His work often serves as a visual record of the customs and fashions of the Dutch elite during the late 18th century. This print is a fine example of his technical ability to combine etching with delicate hand-colouring. It offers a glimpse into the formalised nature of university celebrations, where such processions were used to demonstrate the status and traditions of the institution. The print is preserved in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its value as a historical document of Dutch cultural life.
