A detailed 1851 study by Lambertus Lingeman, depicting a woman in traditional dress absorbed in a book, rendered in graphite and chalk.
This drawing by Lambertus Lingeman, dated 1851, captures a quiet moment of domestic study. The subject, a woman in traditional attire, sits with a book held open in her lap. Her posture is relaxed, with one arm resting on a surface, suggesting a pause in her reading. Lingeman employs a combination of graphite and chalk to build form and texture, particularly in the rendering of the fabric of her skirt and the soft folds of her head covering.
The work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century Dutch interest in genre scenes and historical costume. Lingeman, known for his attention to period detail, provides a clear view of the clothing styles of the era. The use of a neutral, toned paper allows the artist to use white highlights to define the light falling on the pages of the book and the woman's face, creating a sense of volume. The composition is focused entirely on the figure, with the background left largely suggested, which directs the viewer's attention to the woman's concentrated expression.
Technically, the drawing demonstrates a high level of control over shading and line. The cross-hatching in the darker areas of the clothing provides depth, while the lighter, more fluid lines around the face and hands suggest a softer touch. The signature and date are clearly visible in the lower right corner, alongside additional annotations that provide context for the work's creation. This piece offers a glimpse into the academic drawing practices of the time, where the study of the human figure in a specific setting was a primary exercise for artists. It remains a fine example of the technical precision found in Lingeman's body of work, capturing a sense of stillness and individual character.
