A study in black chalk by Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam, depicting a woman engaged in the domestic craft of lace making.
This drawing by Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam captures a quiet moment of domestic labour. The artist, a Dutch painter active in Leiden, frequently depicted the daily lives of ordinary people. His work often focuses on the activities of the working class, such as tailors, cobblers, and lace makers. In this study, a woman sits on a simple wooden chair, her attention fixed on the lace pillow resting upon her lap. The use of black chalk allows for soft transitions in tone, creating a sense of volume in her clothing and the simple furniture.
Van Brekelenkam was a member of the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke. His approach to genre scenes is characterised by a focus on the dignity of manual work. The composition is straightforward, placing the figure centrally to emphasise the concentration required for her task. The inclusion of the footstool and the specific posture of the woman provides a realistic glimpse into the domestic environment of the seventeenth-century Netherlands. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to document the textures of the fabric and the wooden surfaces with economy and precision.
This piece offers a view into the technical process of a Dutch Golden Age master. The lines are deliberate, showing the artist's ability to define form through light and shadow. By focusing on the act of lace making, the drawing documents a common trade of the period, elevated here through the artist's observational skill. It remains a clear example of the period's interest in the mundane aspects of life, rendered with a focus on human activity and the physical reality of the home.
