A 1956 ink drawing by Dutch CoBrA artist Lucebert, featuring a totemic, abstract figure rendered in fluid, calligraphic lines.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and the raw, unmediated creativity often associated with children or folk art. This work, Zonnepriester (Sun Priest), dates from 1956, a period when his visual language had matured into a distinct, linear style.
The composition features a central, totemic figure constructed from fluid, calligraphic ink lines. The form is skeletal and fragmented, suggesting a ritualistic or mythological subject. Lucebert employs a minimalist approach, using varying line weights to define the figure against the stark, unadorned background. Geometric elements, such as the circular sun-like form in the upper right and the ladder-like structures within the torso, create a sense of internal rhythm. The drawing avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, graphic arrangement that emphasises the immediacy of the mark-making process.
Lucebert's work often reflects a tension between the grotesque and the lyrical. In Zonnepriester, the figure appears both fragile and imposing. The ink strokes are decisive, showing the influence of his background in poetry, where economy of language is paramount. By stripping away representational detail, he invites the viewer to engage with the symbolic weight of the forms themselves. This piece captures the experimental spirit of the 1950s, where artists sought to break from established academic traditions through direct, intuitive creation. The presence of the artist's signature and the date, alongside the handwritten title, provides a clear record of its origin within his broader body of work.
