A detailed seventeenth-century botanical engraving by Johannes Janssonius, featuring the flowering rush and wild clary with period-accurate nomenclature.
This botanical engraving by Johannes Janssonius presents two distinct plant specimens, identified in the accompanying text as Gladiolus palustris and Horminum sylvestre. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century natural history documentation, where scientific accuracy and clarity take precedence over decorative flair. The left specimen, the flowering rush, is depicted with its characteristic umbel of buds and blossoms, while the right specimen, the wild clary, shows the structured, opposite leaf arrangement and spiked inflorescence typical of the Lamiaceae family.
Janssonius, primarily known for his cartographic work and publishing house in Amsterdam, produced various scientific plates that reflect the period's obsession with cataloguing the natural world. The engraving technique employs fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the leaves and the delicate structure of the petals. The inclusion of Latin, French, and German nomenclature above each plant indicates the intended utility of this work for scholars and collectors across Europe. The plate numbers 84 and 85 suggest this image originated from a larger compendium or florilegium, a common format for disseminating botanical knowledge before the advent of modern photography.
Unlike later, more stylised botanical art, this print maintains a functional aesthetic. The background remains plain, allowing the viewer to focus on the morphological features of the plants. The paper shows the expected signs of age, including slight discolouration and the texture of a bound volume, which adds to the historical character of the piece. This print is a representative example of the scientific rigour applied to botanical study during the Dutch Golden Age, providing a clear visual record of flora as they were understood and classified in the mid-seventeenth century.
