Titled Zware tijden (een keizerprent), or Hard Times (an Imperial Print), the composition reflects the anxieties surrounding the outbreak of the First World War.

At the centre of the scene, a winged figure, representing the Archangel Michael, brandishes a sword and a cross. The figure stands upon a rock inscribed with the word 'Europa'. The atmosphere is dense with smoke and chaotic energy, suggesting the onset of conflict. To the left, a seated Buddha figure emerges from the clouds, providing a stark contrast between Eastern spiritualism and the impending Western military struggle. Below, figures gather in a state of contemplation or distress, while the background features silhouettes of architectural forms and artillery.

Bauer employs a dense, cross-hatched technique to build up the shadows and the turbulent sky.
