A whimsical Jugendstil illustration by Fritz Rehm, depicting a dwarf king and his fantastical retinue marching through a meadow.
Fritz Rehm, a German illustrator active during the turn of the twentieth century, produced this whimsical composition titled Zwergkönig und sein Gefolge. The work displays the characteristic playfulness of German fairy-tale illustration from the period, blending naturalistic observation of flora with fantastical, anthropomorphic figures. The scene depicts a procession of dwarves, led by a monarch mounted on a donkey, moving through a field of tall grasses.
Rehm employs a clear, narrative style that draws upon the visual language of the Jugendstil movement. The figures are rendered with distinct personalities, from the drummer and flautist at the front to the armoured knight riding a large frog. The attention to detail is evident in the depiction of the insects, such as the stag beetle in the foreground, and the carefully observed botanical elements. The composition is horizontal, designed to guide the viewer across the narrative sequence of the procession.
The colour palette remains balanced, utilising earthy tones for the meadow and muted greens for the foliage, which allows the brighter garments of the figures to stand out. The artist balances the fantastical nature of the subjects with a grounded, almost scientific approach to the surrounding environment. This print captures a specific moment in European illustration, where folklore and natural history often intersected in children's literature and decorative art. The work reflects the technical proficiency of early twentieth-century lithographic printing, maintaining the clarity of Rehm's original line work and the subtle gradients of his colour application. It is a piece that invites close inspection, revealing small details like the toadstools and the varied expressions of the retinue members upon repeated viewing.
