August Allebé
August Allebé spent much of his career as a director at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He changed the way art was taught in the Netherlands by encouraging students to look at their surroundings rather than just copying old masters. While he was a mentor to the Amsterdam Impressionists, his own paintings remained grounded in a meticulous realism. He often painted animals at the Artis zoo, such as in his work Vier dieren, where he recorded physical details with scientific precision.

Biography
Allebé focused on the play of light within domestic spaces. His painting Doorkijk door een geopende deur shows his interest in viewing one room through another. This technique creates a sense of depth and quiet observation. His portraits, including Portret van dominee Ottho Gerhard Heldring and Portret van kunstenaar Wouter Verschuur, avoid dramatic poses. Instead, they capture the sitters in calm, naturalistic settings. He used a muted colour palette to maintain a sense of realism in both his portraits and his outdoor scenes like Landschap bij stormachtig weer.
Modern collectors value Allebé for his technical skill and his ability to find beauty in ordinary moments. His work bridges the gap between traditional Dutch realism and the freer styles that followed. Pieces like Korenveld bij Rome show his ability to handle light and shadow without relying on grand gestures. These prints provide a sense of calm and order. They work well in contemporary homes because of their clear compositions and understated subjects.
