Hendrik Goltzius
Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) was a Dutch engraver who studied with Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert from 1574. He followed Coornhert from Cleves to Haarlem in 1577. During this period, he produced extensive series of biblical allegories, including the Allegories on the Life of Christ and the Allegories of the Christian Creed. These works utilised a method of scriptural exegesis that relied on the correlation of biblical texts and images.
Biography
Following a visit to Rome in 1590, Goltzius made drawings of ancient sculptures, which he later transferred to copperplate. These engravings, published after his death in 1617, explored the relationship between two-dimensional print and three-dimensional sculpture. His work often examined the limits of perspective and the representation of the classical nude.
