Willem Romeyn
Willem Romeyn studied under Nicolaes Berchem in Haarlem before travelling to Italy. He lived in Rome during the mid-seventeenth century and joined the Schildersbent, a society of Northern artists working in the city. His observations of the Campo Vaccino are particularly notable. This site was the ancient Roman Forum, but in Romeyn's time, it functioned as a common cattle market. He recorded this specific overlap of ancient history and daily agriculture.
Biography
Romeyn is known for his depictions of cattle and sheep set against Italian ruins. He often placed his animals in the foreground to give them a sense of weight. Works like Kudde bij een fontein demonstrate his focus on the anatomy of the livestock. He used a palette of earthy ochre and soft blues to capture the atmosphere of the Roman Campagna. His brushwork is precise and avoids the loose style of later pastoral painters.
His art remains popular for its quiet and balanced quality. The combination of domestic animals and classical architecture creates a peaceful mood that works well in modern homes. Romeyn did not seek to create grand historical narratives. Instead, he painted the stillness of the afternoon. These prints provide a connection to the Dutch Italianate tradition through factual observation and clear composition.
