A serene pastoral scene by Dutch Golden Age painter Willem Romeyn, depicting a herd of cattle and sheep resting in a golden, sunlit field.
Willem Romeyn, a painter active in Haarlem during the seventeenth century, produced this work in the tradition of the Dutch Italianate school. The composition features a group of cattle and sheep resting upon a gentle rise, set against a distant, hazy horizon. Romeyn was a pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, and this influence is visible in the treatment of the animals and the soft, atmospheric quality of the sky.
The scene is constructed with a focus on the quietude of rural life. The animals are rendered with anatomical precision, their forms occupying the foreground with a sense of physical weight. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ranging from deep umbers to soft ochres, which unify the figures with the surrounding terrain. The light appears to emanate from a low sun, casting long, subtle shadows and bathing the distant hills in a golden, diffused glow. This technique creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the immediate detail of the herd toward the faint outlines of buildings and trees in the background.
Romeyn frequently depicted such pastoral scenes, which were popular among collectors of the period for their calm, orderly representation of the countryside. Unlike the more dramatic compositions of his contemporaries, this work prioritises a balanced, harmonious arrangement. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, filled with light, wispy clouds that suggest a temperate climate. The overall effect is one of stillness, capturing a brief moment of repose in the daily cycle of the herd. This fine art print preserves the subtle tonal shifts and the delicate brushwork of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's technical approach to light and form.
