A whimsical, surrealist composition by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, depicting a cat as a complex, city-like structure filled with organic patterns and gold tones.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born Friedrich Stowasser, was an Austrian artist known for his rejection of straight lines and his embrace of organic forms. His work often features a personal mythology, blending architectural motifs with biological shapes. In 906 Domestic Cat – The Cat of Atlantis, the artist presents a whimsical interpretation of a feline form, transformed into a complex structure that resembles a miniature city or a floating vessel.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. The upper portion features a large, circular head filled with small, window-like squares, suggesting a domestic interior or a series of rooms. Below this, the body of the cat dissolves into a rhythmic pattern of vertical, teardrop-shaped elements, reminiscent of the artist's fascination with repetitive, natural growth patterns. The colour palette is characteristic of Hundertwasser, utilising gold, deep blues, and earthy tones to create a sense of warmth and mystery.
Hundertwasser often incorporated metallic foils and unconventional materials into his original works, which adds a reflective quality to the surface. This piece reflects his broader philosophy regarding the harmony between humans, nature, and the built environment. By anthropomorphising the cat as a carrier of a lost civilisation, he invites the viewer to consider the relationship between the mundane, such as a household pet, and the mythical, such as the sunken city of Atlantis. The lack of rigid perspective and the use of flattened, decorative planes are hallmarks of his mature style, which prioritised individual expression over academic conventions. This print captures the specific textures and chromatic depth of the original, allowing for a close examination of the artist's unique visual language.
