A 1860 woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo depicting a Westerner and a leopard in kimono, reflecting the cultural curiosity of the Yokohama-e genre.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo, produced in 1860, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. They document the Japanese public's fascination with the arrival of Westerners, often blending factual observation with imaginative, sometimes satirical, interpretations of foreign customs and appearances.
The composition depicts a Western man, identifiable by his facial hair and attire, crouching in a defensive or alert posture. Beside him stands a leopard, anthropomorphised and draped in a kimono, suggesting a narrative of disguise or transformation. The inclusion of text blocks, common in ukiyo-e, provides context for the scene, which likely draws upon contemporary folklore or theatrical tropes of the period. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines of the woodblock medium, using a palette of earthy yellows, blacks, and muted blues to define the figures against a simple background.
Yoshitoyo, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was active during a period of rapid social change in Japan. His work captures the curiosity and apprehension felt by the local population as they encountered new technologies, fashions, and people from abroad. The print serves as a visual record of this cultural collision, where the exotic nature of the foreigner is equated with the presence of a wild animal. The print is a fine example of the period's graphic output, demonstrating the technical skill of the carvers and printers who translated the artist's designs into mass-produced images for an eager audience. The work remains a curious piece of historical documentation, reflecting the anxieties and wonder of mid-nineteenth-century Japan.
