László Moholy-Nagy produced A II in 1924 during his tenure at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This work represents his exploration of light, transparency, and spatial relationships through non-representational forms. The composition relies on the interaction of geometric shapes, including rectangles and circles, which appear to float against a textured, ochre-toned background.

Moholy-Nagy utilised the concept of transparency to create a sense of depth without traditional perspective. By layering semi-transparent planes of colour, he suggests a three-dimensional space constructed from light and shadow. The yellow diagonal bar cuts across the horizontal black form, while the red circle provides a point of visual tension. These elements demonstrate his interest in how industrial materials and light could be translated into painting.

As a key figure in the development of modern design, Moholy-Nagy sought to remove the artist's hand from the final output, favouring precision and clarity. The clean edges and flat application of paint in A II reflect this objective. The work avoids narrative content, focusing instead on the mechanics of vision and the arrangement of formal elements.
