A dynamic woodblock print from the 1813 publication 'A Thicket of Pictures Without Shapes' by the Japanese artist Chō Gesshō.
This woodblock print originates from the 1813 publication 'A Thicket of Pictures Without Shapes' (Fukei gasō), a collection of designs by the Nagoya-based artist Chō Gesshō. Gesshō was a practitioner of the Shijō school, which sought to combine the technical precision of the Kano school with the observational approach of the Maruyama-Shijō tradition. This particular plate demonstrates his ability to render dynamic movement within the constraints of the woodblock medium.
The composition depicts a mounted warrior, his expression intense and his posture alert. The horse is captured in mid-stride, its form rendered with bold, dark ink blocks that contrast against the lighter, negative space of the background. Gesshō employs a restrained colour palette, relying on the interplay of black ink and subtle washes to define the textures of the warrior's armour and the animal's coat. The lines are precise, reflecting the artist's training in brush techniques, while the overall arrangement across the two pages creates a sense of forward momentum.
Unlike the more static portraits often found in contemporary prints, this work focuses on the energy of the subject. The lack of a detailed background ensures that the viewer remains focused on the interaction between the rider and the mount. The work serves as a record of the aesthetic priorities of the early nineteenth-century Japanese print market, where instructional manuals and design books were produced for both students and enthusiasts of the arts. The print is a clear example of the technical proficiency required to translate brush-and-ink sketches into the multi-block printing process, maintaining the fluidity of the original hand-drawn lines while achieving the consistency necessary for book production.
