A woodblock print from the 1803 book Gazu sui Fuyō, featuring fluid calligraphic lines and a whimsical narrative scene by Japanese artist Suzuki Fuyō.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book Gazu sui Fuyō, or Drawings by the Drunken Fuyō, published in 1803. Suzuki Fuyō, a painter and printmaker active during the Edo period, utilised a minimalist approach to line work in this series. The composition is divided across two pages, presenting a narrative scene that balances humour with technical restraint. On the left, a figure rests within a large, curved form, while on the right, a group of children appear to be pulling or interacting with the same object. The artist employs calligraphic brushwork to define the figures and the surrounding space, leaving much of the paper surface unadorned to focus the viewer on the interaction between the characters.
The work reflects the tradition of Japanese book illustration, where text and image share the page to convey a specific story or moral. Fuyō, who studied under the Nanga school, brings a sense of spontaneity to these pages. The ink lines are fluid and direct, showing the influence of brush painting techniques translated into the woodblock medium. The lack of heavy shading or complex colour palettes allows the viewer to appreciate the economy of the artist's hand. This print offers a glimpse into the lighter, more whimsical side of Edo-period artistic production, moving away from the formalised portraiture often associated with the era. The juxtaposition of the reclining figure and the active children creates a sense of movement that is captured through simple, effective strokes. As a piece of historical graphic art, it demonstrates the capacity for narrative storytelling through minimal visual information, a hallmark of the period's print culture.
