This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts a kabuki actor in the role of a travelling dry goods merchant. Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, active during the early eighteenth century, and is recognised for his contributions to the development of early ukiyo-e printmaking techniques. The work is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where black ink was thickened with glue to simulate the appearance of lacquer, often supplemented by hand-applied pigments.

The composition focuses on the figure of the peddler, who carries a large, rectangular wooden chest on his back. The chest is filled with various textile rolls and goods, rendered with clear, graphic lines.
