A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing the dramatic posture of kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji in the role of Kudō Suketsune.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji in the role of the historical figure Kudō Suketsune. Bunchō was a significant figure in the development of the yakusha-e, or actor print, genre during the mid-Edo period. His work is noted for its departure from the stylised, uniform faces of earlier artists, moving instead toward a more individualised representation of the performers.
The composition employs a narrow vertical format, known as hosoban, which was the standard for single-sheet actor portraits of the era. The actor is captured in a dramatic pose, his body angled to convey the tension of the theatrical performance. The background is simplified, featuring architectural elements that suggest an interior setting without distracting from the central figure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted pigments that have aged with the paper.
Bunchō often collaborated with Katsukawa Shunshō, and together they refined the depiction of actors to capture specific facial features and expressions. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the graphic requirements of woodblock printing with the fluid lines of traditional brushwork. The figure's posture, with one arm bent and the other extended, reflects the stylised movements of the kabuki stage. The discarded garment at the base of the composition adds a sense of narrative context, implying a moment of preparation or transition within the play. This piece serves as an example of the technical precision and aesthetic focus that defined the output of the Katsukawa school during the late 18th century.
