Alphard - Morris Louis

Alphard (1960) belongs to the Stripe series, a body of work produced by Morris Louis during the final years of his career. In these compositions, Louis applied Magna, an acrylic resin paint, to unprimed canvas. By thinning the pigment, he allowed the colour to soak directly into the weave of the fabric, rather than sitting on the surface as a traditional oil paint would. This technique creates a sense of transparency and unity between the medium and the support.

The visual structure of Alphard consists of a vertical column of parallel bands. These stripes vary in hue, ranging from bright yellow and red to deep green and purple. The edges of the colour bands appear slightly feathered where the paint has bled into the raw canvas. By placing this dense, vertical arrangement against a large expanse of negative space, Louis draws attention to the physical properties of the paint and the flatness of the canvas. Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School, a group of artists who moved away from the gestural brushwork of earlier abstract painters.
