A mid-nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock print depicting an American woman on horseback, created during the opening of Japan to international trade.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists produced these works to satisfy public curiosity regarding foreign customs, dress, and technology. The print depicts a woman from the United States, rendered through the lens of Japanese artistic conventions of the mid-nineteenth century.
The subject is shown mounted on a horse, wearing a voluminous skirt and a collared jacket. Her features and posture reflect the stylistic interpretations common to Yoshitora, who was a prolific designer of these foreign-themed prints. The composition is clean and direct, focusing on the figure against a plain background. A cartouche at the top provides the title and context, identifying the subject as American. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of blue, brown, and soft red, which are characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the era.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became well-known for his depictions of foreigners and their ships. These prints functioned as a visual news medium for a society undergoing rapid change. The work captures a specific moment in Japanese history where the isolationist policies of the shogunate were ending, and the influx of Western influence began to reshape the visual culture of the nation. The print is a document of this cultural encounter, showing how Japanese artists attempted to translate unfamiliar Western aesthetics into the traditional woodblock format.
