Description

A series of six screenprints by Sol LeWitt, featuring geometric arrangements of arcs, bands, and waves in saturated colours.

Sol LeWitt, a figure associated with the development of Conceptual art and Minimalism, produced this series of screenprints in 1999. The work demonstrates his interest in systems, logic, and the reduction of art to its primary components. Rather than relying on traditional painterly gestures, LeWitt utilised a set of predetermined rules to dictate the placement of lines, arcs, and bands of colour across the six panels.

The composition is defined by a rigorous geometric framework. Each square panel contains a distinct arrangement of primary and secondary colours, organised into waves, grids, and concentric arcs. The repetition of these forms across the series creates a visual rhythm, yet each individual print maintains its own internal logic. By removing the subjective hand of the artist, LeWitt allows the interaction of colour and shape to become the primary subject of the viewer's attention.

This series reflects the artist's broader practice of creating instructions that could be executed by others, a method that prioritised the idea behind the work over its physical execution. The use of flat, saturated colour fields and clean, hard-edged lines is characteristic of his later graphic works. These prints offer a clear example of how LeWitt explored the mathematical possibilities of visual art, stripping away narrative content to focus on the structural relationships between form and hue. The result is a precise, orderly exploration of visual language that remains accessible through its clarity and balance.

Artist Biography

Sol Lewitt

LeWitt wrote a letter to the sculptor Eva Hesse in 1965 when she was paralysed by self-doubt. He told her to try to do some bad work. The worst you can think of and see what happens but mainly relax and let everything go to hell. Two days after Hesse's death in 1970, he created Wall Drawing 46 in her memory, using non-straight lines for the first time. The aesthetic shift was credited to her influence.

He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1928, to Russian Jewish immigrant parents. His father died when he was six. He drew on wrapping paper from his aunt's shop and took art classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum. He served in the Korean War, then settled in New York.

From 1968, he created over a thousand numbered wall drawings. He conceived them as musical scores that anyone could execute: a set of written instructions, carried out by other people, with the physical drawing destroyed after each exhibition. The idea, he argued, was the machine that makes the art. The execution was secondary. He championed and financially supported women artists who were being sidelined by the male-dominated art world. He refused to participate in celebrity culture and remained deliberately private. He died in 2007.
