A late Ming Dynasty fan painting by Wu Bin, featuring a rugged mountain scene with red maples and a secluded pavilion on gold-flecked paper.
Wu Bin was a professional painter active during the late Ming Dynasty. He is known for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects, often employing distorted forms and a highly individualistic brush technique. This fan painting, executed on gold-flecked paper, demonstrates his ability to adapt the classical shan shui (mountain and water) tradition to the constraints of a curved format.
The composition features a rugged, rocky terrain punctuated by clusters of trees. The artist uses a controlled ink wash to define the craggy surfaces of the cliffs, while the red maples provide a seasonal contrast against the muted tones of the rock face. A small pavilion sits atop the higher ground, a common motif in Chinese painting that suggests a space for contemplation or retreat. The fan shape dictates the flow of the image, with the lines of the paper radiating from the base to guide the viewer across the scene.
Wu Bin often experimented with the texture of his surfaces, and the use of gold-flecked paper here adds a subtle luminosity to the work. The calligraphic inscriptions in the upper left corner balance the visual weight of the trees on the right, maintaining the equilibrium required in traditional Chinese composition. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the physical properties of his materials and his departure from the more rigid academic styles of his contemporaries. The work remains a fine example of the late Ming period, where individual expression began to play a larger role in the creation of traditional ink paintings. By focusing on the interplay between the solid rock and the delicate foliage, Wu Bin creates a sense of quiet isolation within the natural world.
