This handscroll by the Ming Dynasty painter Li Zai demonstrates the technical rigour associated with the Zhe School. Li Zai was active during the early 15th century and held a position at the imperial court. His work reflects a conscious engagement with the masters of the Five Dynasties and Southern Song periods, specifically Dong Yuan, Juran, Ma Yuan, and Xia Gui. By synthesising these distinct stylistic lineages, the artist creates a composition that balances monumental rock formations with the atmospheric qualities of ink wash.

The visual structure relies on the contrast between the towering, vertical crags and the soft, obscured valleys. The brushwork employs a variety of textures to define the geological features, moving from dry, jagged strokes for the stone surfaces to delicate, wet applications for the foliage. The composition follows the traditional Chinese format of a continuous narrative, where the viewer moves through the scene from right to left. The negative space, represented by the unpainted silk, suggests mist or water, which provides a sense of depth and scale.

Li Zai uses a restrained palette, typical of the period, where ink tones provide the primary definition of form. The inclusion of small architectural elements at the base of the mountains offers a human scale, grounding the otherwise imposing natural environment. This work is an example of the academic tradition in Chinese art, where the study of historical models was a primary method for developing technical proficiency.
