This woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai depicts a bamboo partridge standing amidst a cluster of bamboo stalks and wild flora. Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, was a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa and later became the official painter for the daimyo of Tsuyama. His work often reflects a transition from the elaborate style of the ukiyo-e school toward a more restrained, observational approach influenced by the Kano school.
The composition follows the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers. The partridge is rendered with meticulous attention to the texture of its plumage, using layered, scalloped patterns to suggest the density of its feathers. The surrounding vegetation, including the bamboo and small blue flowers, is depicted with a light, calligraphic touch. The negative space remains a primary element of the design, allowing the subject to occupy the lower right quadrant while the bamboo stalks extend upward and across the frame.
Keisai was known for his simplified drawing manuals, and this print exhibits the clarity of line and economy of form that defined his later career. The colour palette is muted, relying on soft greens, earthy browns, and subtle blue accents to maintain a naturalistic tone. The print captures a quiet moment in nature, avoiding excessive ornamentation in favour of a balanced, observational perspective. The inclusion of the bamboo stalks provides a vertical anchor to the horizontal spread of the grasses and the bird itself. This piece represents the technical precision of Edo-period printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in works of great refinement and technical control.
