A 1968 screenprint by Patrick Caulfield, featuring a minimalist, graphic depiction of a bathroom mirror reflecting a tiled wall.
Bathroom Mirror is a screenprint by the British artist Patrick Caulfield, produced in 1968. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to representation, where he employs a stark, graphic language to depict mundane domestic objects. Caulfield often utilised flat areas of colour bounded by uniform black outlines, a technique that draws from commercial signage and comic book aesthetics.
In this composition, the artist focuses on the reflection of a tiled wall within a mirror. The grid of the tiles on the wall is rendered as a series of straight, vertical and horizontal lines. Within the rectangular frame of the mirror, these lines are distorted into a diamond pattern, suggesting the curvature or angle of the glass. The colour palette is restricted to shades of turquoise, creating a cool, clinical atmosphere that aligns with the subject matter of a bathroom.
Caulfield avoids painterly brushwork or expressive texture. Instead, he presents a clean, detached view of the environment. By isolating the mirror and the tiles, he invites the viewer to consider the formal qualities of the image rather than its narrative content. The work functions as a study of perspective and spatial illusion, achieved through the simplest of means. The screws visible in the corners of the mirror provide a subtle anchor to the reality of the object, contrasting with the abstract geometry of the reflected grid. This print is representative of Caulfield's contribution to British Pop Art, where he moved away from the chaotic imagery of his contemporaries to pursue a more controlled, precise style of painting and printmaking.
