This work by Jean-Michel Basquiat features his signature blend of primitive figures, bold colours, and graffiti-inspired markings. 'Black Tar and Feathers' captures the raw energy and social commentary that define his neo-expressionist style.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s. By the 1980s, he was exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. 'Black Tar and Feathers' is a striking example of Basquiat's raw and energetic style. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper portion features three figures rendered in a primitive, almost childlike manner, set against backgrounds of red and blue. These figures, outlined in white, are reminiscent of tribal art and street graffiti, two significant influences on Basquiat's work. The lower register is dominated by a dense, textured area of black and brown, overlaid with scrawled white lines and symbols. This section evokes a sense of chaos and urban decay, reflecting the gritty reality of the artist's environment. The overall effect is one of intense emotion and social commentary, characteristic of Basquiat's oeuvre.
