Made to order
A geometric study in blue and violet by Swiss artist Max Bill, focusing on the precise interaction of colour fields and structural order.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work as an exploration of mathematical order and chromatic relationships. The composition relies on the precise interaction of geometric forms, specifically the square rotated to appear as a diamond. By aligning the internal shapes along horizontal and vertical axes, Bill creates a tension between the orientation of the canvas and the internal logic of the painted elements.
The colour palette is restricted to deep blues and violet tones. This choice removes the distraction of representational imagery, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the spatial properties of the shapes. Bill believed that art should be based on objective principles, often drawing from his background in architecture and industrial design. The work avoids emotional expression in favour of clarity and structural integrity.
In this piece, the overlapping of the blue and violet planes creates subtle shifts in depth. The edges are sharp, reflecting the artist's commitment to technical precision. As a practitioner of the Bauhaus tradition, Bill sought to unify art and logic. This print captures the exactitude of his original painting, maintaining the balance between the cool blue centre and the surrounding violet segments. It is an example of how minimal visual information can generate a sense of equilibrium. The work functions as a study in how colour fields interact when placed within a rigid geometric framework, demonstrating the artist's ability to manipulate perception through simple, calculated arrangements.
