A geometric abstract lithograph by Alberto Magnelli, featuring a balanced arrangement of angular forms in shades of blue, brown, and white.
Alberto Magnelli was a central figure in the development of European abstract art. Born in Florence, he moved away from his early figurative experiments to embrace a rigorous, non-representational language. This work, Composizione in Azzurro, demonstrates his mature approach to geometric construction. The composition relies on the interplay of flat planes, sharp angles, and a controlled palette of blues, browns, and off-white tones.
Magnelli often employed a method of layering shapes to create a sense of spatial tension. Here, the dark, hatched forms suggest a structural weight, which is balanced by the lighter, solid blocks of colour. The blue background acts as a unifying field, allowing the geometric elements to appear as if they are suspended in a vacuum. His work from this period reflects a move towards the principles of Concrete Art, where the painting does not refer to external reality but exists as an autonomous object. The lines are precise, and the forms are stripped of unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the relationship between shape, colour, and the surrounding space.
Throughout his career, Magnelli maintained a focus on the clarity of form. His time spent in Paris brought him into contact with other avant-garde artists, yet he retained a distinct approach to abstraction that prioritised architectural stability over fluid gesture. This print captures the essence of his mid-century output, where the balance of positive and negative space becomes the primary subject. The work invites the viewer to observe the interaction of the various geometric components without the distraction of narrative or symbolic meaning. It is a study in order and visual rhythm, characteristic of his contribution to the abstract tradition in the twentieth century.
