A lithograph by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita from 1915, 'Brahmaanse zebu' depicts a zebu in profile with a muted colour palette, showcasing the artist's simplified, expressive style.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944) was a Dutch artist of Sephardic Jewish origin, known for his graphic work, woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings. He taught graphic arts at the Academy for Visual Arts in Amsterdam; his pupils included M. C. Escher. De Mesquita and his family died in the Holocaust. His work is characterised by a simplified, almost abstract style, often depicting animals, figures, and scenes from nature. His use of line and form is economical, yet expressive. 'Brahmaanse zebu' (1915) is a lithograph depicting a zebu, a type of domestic cattle common in South Asia. The animal is shown in profile against a simple background of horizontal and vertical lines, perhaps representing a fence or wall. The zebu's form is rendered with careful attention to its distinctive features, such as the hump on its back and the dewlap beneath its neck. The colour palette is muted, with tones of grey, brown, and cream, creating a serene and contemplative mood. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner of the print.
