A refined Shin-hanga woodblock print by Kitano Tsunetomi, depicting a bride in profile with delicate line work and a muted, elegant colour palette.
Kitano Tsunetomi was a central figure in the development of the Shin-hanga movement in early twentieth-century Japan. Trained initially in the traditional Nihonga style, he later applied his technical precision to the woodblock print medium. This work, titled Bride, captures a moment of quiet introspection. The subject is depicted in profile, her gaze directed downward, which is a common convention in Bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women.
The composition focuses on the delicate balance between the subject and the surrounding space. The bride wears a traditional white headpiece and a patterned kimono, rendered with meticulous attention to the texture of the fabric. The soft, muted colour palette emphasises the understated elegance of the figure. Tsunetomi uses clean, precise lines to define the contours of the face and the elaborate hairstyle, reflecting his background in painting.
Unlike the more dramatic prints of the earlier Ukiyo-e period, this work exhibits a refined, modern sensibility. The background remains largely neutral, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the subtle expressions and the quality of the attire. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with a contemporary approach to portraiture. By focusing on the psychological state of the subject rather than mere decorative display, Tsunetomi creates a sense of intimacy. This piece is representative of the artist's mature period, where he successfully navigated the transition between classical Japanese art forms and the requirements of a modern audience. The attention to detail in the kimono pattern and the subtle shading of the skin demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of such prints during this era.
