Description

A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki, depicting a woman warming her hands over a traditional hibachi in a moment of quiet domesticity.

This woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicts a woman in a moment of quiet domesticity. She is shown kneeling beside a hibachi, a traditional Japanese heating device, to warm her hands. The artist employs the bijin-ga style, which focuses on the representation of beautiful women, often within the context of the pleasure districts or daily life in Edo-period Japan.

The composition is balanced, with the figure of the woman occupying the left and centre of the frame, while the hibachi acts as a grounding element in the foreground. Chōki uses a muted colour palette, dominated by soft purples, warm ochres, and subtle reds. The lines are delicate and precise, characteristic of the refined printmaking techniques of the late eighteenth century. The woman's posture is graceful, her head tilted slightly as she attends to the charcoal embers within the vessel. A small scroll containing calligraphy is positioned in the upper right, providing a textual element that complements the visual narrative.

Eishōsai Chōki is recognised for his ability to capture subtle emotional states and atmospheric conditions. Unlike some of his contemporaries who favoured bold, high-contrast designs, Chōki often opted for a more understated approach. This print demonstrates his skill in balancing negative space with detailed textile patterns on the woman's kimono. The inclusion of the small lidded container near the base of the hibachi adds a layer of realism to the scene, suggesting a specific moment in time. The work provides a window into the aesthetic values of the period, where the depiction of everyday objects and human gestures was elevated through the medium of the woodblock print.
