A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a wooden cabinet and folded textiles accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Shinsai, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the material qualities of objects through the medium of the woodblock.
The composition depicts a wooden cabinet, likely used for storing toilet articles or personal effects, positioned alongside a folded textile or bedclothes. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the focus to remain on the textures of the wood grain, the patterned fabric, and the calligraphic inscriptions that surround the objects. These inscriptions are typical of surimono, often containing kyōka (witty or satirical poems) that relate to the imagery or the occasion for which the print was commissioned.
Shinsai demonstrates a keen eye for detail in the rendering of the cabinet, which features decorative panels with floral motifs. The folded textile in the foreground provides a contrast in form, with its soft, draped appearance balancing the rigid geometry of the cabinet. The inclusion of a small sprig of pine in the lower right corner adds a natural element, grounding the domestic objects within a seasonal context. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the literati of the time, who appreciated the subtle beauty of everyday items elevated through artistic representation. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the subjects demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of these limited-edition prints, which were intended for a sophisticated audience familiar with the literary and cultural references embedded within the work.
