Andrea Mantegna's "Calvary" is the central predella panel from the St. Zeno altarpiece, a work commissioned for the basilica of San Zeno in Verona. Executed in tempera on panel, this painting exemplifies Mantegna's mastery of perspective and his ability to convey emotional intensity. The altarpiece was commissioned in 1456 and completed in 1459. The predella panels were seized by the French in 1797, during the Napoleonic occupation of Italy, and were later restored to Verona, although not re-integrated into the altarpiece. The "Calvary" panel is now held at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The scene depicts the crucifixion of Christ, flanked by the two thieves. Mantegna's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the musculature of the figures and the rendering of the rocky landscape. The composition is divided into distinct planes, creating a sense of depth. The foreground features a group of mourners, including the Virgin Mary, while Roman soldiers are depicted in the middle ground. In the background, a city is visible, rendered with precise architectural detail. The use of colour is restrained, with muted tones that contribute to the solemn atmosphere of the scene.
