A panel from the life of St. Nicholas, painted c. 1437 by Fra Angelico, depicts the saint saving a ship in a vivid scene of faith and divine intervention.
This panel, painted c. 1437 by Fra Angelico (1395-1455), depicts a scene from the life of St. Nicholas. Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, was known for his serene religious works, often characterised by their bright colours and attention to detail. He combined the traditions of the late Gothic style with the emerging principles of Renaissance art. The painting illustrates St. Nicholas saving a ship, a miracle attributed to the saint's intercession. The composition is divided into distinct areas, with a coastal scene on the left and a turbulent sea on the right. Figures on the shore observe the unfolding event, while St. Nicholas is seen in the sky, his presence indicated by a halo. The ships are tossed about by the waves, and the artist captures the drama of the moment with stylised depictions of the sea and sky. The colours are typical of Fra Angelico's palette, featuring blues, reds, and golds, which add to the overall sense of reverence and awe.
